On October 30, 2025, the SMG Innovation Salon was successfully held in Room B-101, Discipline Building 2, on the High-Tech Campus. The event specially invited Ge Wentao from the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory of the University of Science and Technology of China, who has a strong background in both academia and industry, to deliver a thematic talk titled “Machine Learning and Data Analysis: A Shift in Thinking from Scientific Research to Industrial Innovation.” The talk bridged academic frontiers and industry practice, bringing together faculty members and students of the research group to explore the application prospects of technology in industrial transformation, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Ge Wentao is not only engaged in frontier scientific research at the university, but also previously served as Head of Quantitative Research at Zhurun Investment, accumulating extensive practical experience in the hedge fund sector. Starting from the basic theories of machine learning and data analysis, he systematically reviewed the latest trends in the integrated application of these technologies across multiple fields, including materials science and financial technology. He focused in particular on how quantitative thinking and data analysis methods can be transformed into tools for industrial insight and decision-making. Drawing on real cases from the financial industry, Ge Wentao vividly explained how data-driven approaches can empower business model innovation and risk management, providing the faculty members and students in attendance with a solid and fresh perspective on technology implementation and industry trends.

During the discussion session, participating faculty members and students actively raised questions on topics such as “typical application scenarios of machine learning in industry,” “how technical talent can participate in innovation and entrepreneurship,” and “cross-disciplinary capability development and shifts in thinking.” Drawing on his own experience of moving from scientific research to industry, Ge Wentao responded to each question in depth. The on-site interaction was active, and the discussion atmosphere was lively.

This salon was one of the SMG Innovation Salon’s series of activities aimed at continuously promoting industry-university-research dialogue and broadening students’ understanding of industry. By inviting experts with practical industrial experience to share their insights, the laboratory is committed to breaking down barriers between academic disciplines and industry, guiding students to pay attention to the business logic and innovation pathways behind technology, and building an open exchange platform for cultivating interdisciplinary talent with both technical depth and industry vision. Going forward, the SMG Innovation Salon will continue to focus on technological frontiers and industrial trends, and will organize more high-quality cross-disciplinary exchange activities.
