On October 18, 2026, the Technology Investor Program at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) held a “three-in-one” module combining the completion session for its first cohort, the opening session for its second cohort, and the third study-visit module. At the invitation of USTC’s Faculty of Business for Science & Technology and School of Management, Professor Liangbin Li delivered a lecture providing a systematic overview of the scientific principles, facility development, and industrial applications of synchrotron light sources. Professor Li serves as Party Committee Secretary and Executive Dean of the School of Nuclear Science and Technology, Executive Dean of the School of Future Energy, Party Committee Secretary and Deputy Director of the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory, and Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Hefei Advanced Light Facility (HALF) project.

Drawing on experience in developing the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory and the Hefei Advanced Light Facility, Professor Li explained the important role of large-scale scientific facilities in supporting fundamental research and driving industrial innovation. The lecture offered participants new perspectives on harnessing these facilities to advance industrial innovation. Focusing on frontier fields such as nuclear fusion, new energy, and new materials, the course brought together science and technology, industry, and investment, helping participants better understand practical pathways for generating technological spin-offs throughout the development of large-scale scientific facilities.

Eager to continue the conversation after the lecture, participants engaged in further discussions with Professor Li on the industrial applications of synchrotron light sources, pathways for translating research outcomes from large-scale scientific facilities into practical applications, and investment opportunities in frontier fields such as nuclear fusion, new energy, and new materials. Professor Li addressed the participants’ questions individually, fostering a lively exchange of ideas.
